Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 14, 2026
1. Overview
This Privacy Policy describes how Dakota Labs LLC ("Dakota Labs," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and handles information when you use Beau, our mobile application for tracking and supporting your dog's day-to-day care. Beau combines local event tracking, cross-device sync, and a small set of bounded, deterministic smart features (KB Search, Symptom Triage, Weight Trend, and Find-a-Vet) that operate over your own structured data and a curated, vet-reviewed dog-care knowledge base. These features run on Beau's own servers and do not use any third-party AI provider.
We do not sell your data. We do not use your data to train machine-learning models. We do not store the content of your search queries and triage answers after the response is generated. We do not share your data with advertisers. We do not track you across other apps or websites.
2. What we collect and why
The list below is the complete set of data Beau collects. Each item is explained with what it is, how it is collected, and why we need it.
Email address (optional)
Collected only if you sign in with Sign in with Apple or, on Android, Google Sign-In. Apple may withhold or substitute your real email with a private relay address — that is your choice and we receive only what Apple passes us. Used to identify your account and to send account-related transactional email (e.g., subscription receipts, account-deletion confirmations). Never used for marketing without your explicit consent.
Name (optional)
Collected only via Sign in with Apple's name field, which Apple presents to you on first sign-in. You may withhold it; we accept whatever Apple passes. Used only to personalize in-app greetings.
Dog profiles and photos
The name, breed, birthdate, weight, sex, and photo you provide for each of your dogs. Stored on your device, synced to your private iCloud account via Apple CloudKit, and (where required for cross-device features like the smart features and Health Records) replicated to Beau's API servers under your account.
Event logs
Walks, meals, sleep entries, training sessions, weight entries, vet visits, medications, and milestones you log in the app, including timestamps and any notes you attach. Stored on your device, synced to iCloud, and replicated to Beau's API servers so the smart features (such as Weight Trend) can operate over a consistent dataset across your devices.
Health records
Vaccinations, medications, allergies, and vet-visit notes you choose to enter. Replicated to Beau's API servers under your account, encrypted in transit (TLS) and stored in a database that is encrypted at rest by Railway. Used to power medication reminders and to populate your in-app health-record views; never used for any purpose beyond those features.
Search and triage inputs
The text you type into KB Search, and the structured answers you give to the Symptom Triage Wizard. These inputs are processed on Beau's servers and are not sent to any third-party AI provider. We do not store your KB Search query history on our servers, and we do not store Symptom Triage Wizard answer history beyond the duration of the triage session. The result is rendered in-app and is not persisted on our servers after the response is generated. See section 4 for the per-feature breakdown.
Subscription receipts (Beau Plus)
If you subscribe to Beau Plus, the transaction is processed entirely by Apple's StoreKit 2 (on iOS) or Google Play Billing (on Android, slice 2 forward). Beau's servers validate the receipt and store only the subscription state — active or expired, product identifier, renewal date. We never see your payment card details; Apple and Google handle billing end-to-end.
Crash and diagnostic data
The Sentry SDK runs in the Beau iOS app and on Beau's API servers. It captures crash stack traces, non-fatal errors, and non-sensitive context (device model, OS version, app version, locale, anonymized request IDs). User-content fields — your search and triage inputs, dog names, notes, photos, health records — are scrubbed from crash payloads at the SDK level. Used to find and fix bugs; never used for advertising or profiling.
3. Where your data is stored
On your device. Dog profiles, events, and app preferences are stored locally using Apple's SwiftData framework (and the Android equivalent on slice 2).
In your iCloud account. If you have iCloud enabled for Beau, the same data is synced across your Apple devices via Apple CloudKit. CloudKit data lives in your personal iCloud container — not in any Dakota Labs–operated CloudKit container — and is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
On Beau's API servers. Dog profiles, event logs, health records, and subscription state are also stored on Beau's API servers (hosted on Railway, see section 5) under your account. This server-side copy is what powers the smart features, cross-device consistency, and account recovery. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS), and the database itself is encrypted at rest by Railway. A small number of especially sensitive free-text fields — the free text of any safety report you submit and the original message stored in vet-redirect audit logs — are additionally encrypted at the column level.
4. How Beau's smart features work
Beau's smart features are a small, fixed set of bounded, structured tools. Each has a fixed scope, operates on Beau's own servers over your own data and a curated, vet-reviewed dog-care knowledge base, and returns a structured result that is rendered in the app. They are built on a vet-reviewed knowledge base, not an open chatbot, and they do not use any third-party AI provider. The same information is available inside the app under Settings → How Beau Works.
- KB Search — searches our curated 81-article dog-care knowledge base using full-text search and returns the most relevant articles. Your query is processed on our servers and is not stored.
- Symptom Triage Wizard — a structured decision guide that suggests an urgency level and next steps from the symptom answers you select. Evaluated on our servers over your answers and your dog's basic profile (breed, age, weight); your answers are not stored after the session.
- Weight Trend Explainer — a plain-language explanation of your dog's recent weight trend, computed on our servers from the weights you have logged.
- Find-a-Vet — filters Apple Maps search results down to veterinary clinics. Results are filtered on your device; your location is not sent to any third-party AI provider.
For all smart features:
- Inputs are not used to train any machine-learning models.
- Inputs are processed only to produce your result and are not stored after the response is generated.
- Each result that relates to your dog's health carries an in-app "not medical advice" footer.
5. Third-party services
Sentry. Crash and performance reporting for both the mobile app and the API server. Receives stack traces and non-sensitive runtime context (device model, OS version, app version). User-content fields are scrubbed before transmission. Sentry's privacy policy: sentry.io/privacy.
Railway. Hosts Beau's API server and database. Data on Railway is encrypted at rest. Railway does not access your data for its own purposes. Railway's privacy policy: railway.com/legal/privacy.
Apple (Sign in with Apple, iCloud / CloudKit, StoreKit 2). On iOS, Apple authenticates you, syncs your data across your Apple devices via your private CloudKit container, and processes Beau Plus purchases via StoreKit 2. Apple's privacy policy governs what Apple sees. We never receive your payment card details.
Google (Sign-In, Play Billing). On Android (slice 2 forward), Google authenticates you via Credential Manager and processes Beau Plus purchases via Google Play Billing. Google's privacy policy governs what Google sees. We never receive your payment card details.
6. What we don't do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not use your data — including your search and triage inputs — to train machine-learning models.
- We do not share your data with advertisers.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not store the content of your search queries and triage answers after the response is generated.
- We do not store your payment details (Apple and Google handle billing).
- We do not run third-party advertising or analytics SDKs in the app beyond Sentry for crash reporting.
7. Account deletion
You can delete your account directly inside the app via Settings → Account → Delete Account. Deletion is permanent and cascades to:
- Your dog profiles and photos
- All event logs (walks, meals, sleep, training, weights, milestones, etc.)
- All health records (vaccinations, medications, allergies, vet-visit notes)
- Your subscription state record (the underlying Apple/Google subscription is managed in your Apple ID or Google account; you can cancel it there)
- Your account identifier and any associated email
Server-side data is removed within 30 days of the deletion request. Backups containing deleted data are rotated out within 90 days. iCloud copies live in your own Apple account — to remove those, see Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Beau.
If for any reason you cannot delete in-app, email [email protected] and we will process the request within 30 days.
8. Children's privacy
Beau is rated 4+ but is not directed at children under 13 and is not designed to collect data about children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 where GDPR-K applies). If we learn that we have collected such information, we will delete it. If you believe a child has provided personal information through Beau, please contact us at [email protected].
9. Regional rights
European Union / United Kingdom (GDPR). If you are in the EU or UK, you have the right to access, correct, delete, port, and restrict the processing of your personal data, and to object to processing. To exercise these rights, contact [email protected]. We are the data controller for the data described in this policy. Our lawful bases for processing are: contract (operating the app for you), legitimate interests (security, debugging via Sentry, fraud prevention), and consent (optional features like name personalization).
California (CCPA / CPRA). California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect, to delete that information, to correct it, and to opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law. You may exercise your rights by emailing [email protected].
Other jurisdictions. We honor equivalent rights wherever applicable law grants them. Contact us via the email above.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Beau evolves. When we make a material change — for example, adding a new third-party service or a new smart feature — we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, notify you in-app before the change takes effect. Continued use of Beau after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
